The event, featuring the groups Parranderos and Punto and the San Borondón Folk Association, will take place this Saturday in the Plaza de la Concepción starting at 8:00 pm.
This Saturday, 4 October, La Laguna City Council is organising Tarde de las Tradiciones (Afternoon of Traditions), a musical show featuring the groups Parranderos and Punto and the San Borondón Folk Association, who will take the audience on a musical journey between the Canary Islands and America to celebrate the 25th anniversary of La Laguna’s declaration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The event will take place on the stage set up under the tower of the Church of La Concepción starting at 8:00 p.m.
The Afternoon of Traditions is an evening of music and traditions featuring two musical groups from La Laguna with extensive experience, commemorating this anniversary by bringing together two different musical styles with a historical link in the same show.
First, the A. F. San Borondón will showcase the purest Canarian tradition with its dance troupe representing the folklore of the islands. Next, Parranderos y Punto will offer a musical repertoire that spans Cuba, Venezuela, Argentina and other Latin American countries, with a selection of songs that connect the tradition that unites the Canary Islands and La Laguna with South America.
Parranderos y Punto was formed in 2009 by a group of music-loving friends from different bands who decided to form a parranda to perform and offer a repertoire of boleros, sones, guarachas and Cuban puntos, without forgetting their Canarian origins. They have made two recordings (“Tal como somos” and “Sentimientos”) and have extensive experience performing on stages throughout the archipelago.
For its part, the San Borondón Folk Group was founded in 1979 in the village of San Miguel de Geneto under the direction of Pedro Martín Dorta. In its early days, with the help of great folklorists from the archipelago, it focused on the traditional repertoire with a large number of its own compositions. Soon after, it incorporated a dance troupe, rigorously tackling the repertoire of the eight islands. The group has released two albums, “A Geneto al baile” and “Folcloreando”, and is known for its scrupulous attention to detail when it comes to wearing traditional Canarian costumes.
The events marking the 25th anniversary of the declaration of San Cristóbal de La Laguna as a UNESCO World Heritage Site are sponsored by the Government of the Canary Islands.
