Fifteen schools in the municipality walk through the historic centre to converge at Plaza del Cristo for the Second Peace March.
More than 1,200 children from La Laguna took part on Tuesday in the Second Peace March, an initiative launched in 2024 by the Rotary Club with the support of La Laguna City Council to mark the 25th anniversary of La Laguna’s designation as a World Heritage Site. With this second edition, the march aims to establish itself as an annual event linked to the celebration of this anniversary.
Fifteen schools in the municipality joined this initiative, with a march that started at Plaza de la Concepción and passed through Obispo Rey Redondo and Viana streets until reaching Plaza del Cristo. The following schools took part in the march: CEIP Camino Largo, Punta del Hidalgo, Aguere, La Verdellada, Ángeles Bermejo, Clorinda Salazar, San Matías, San Luis Gonzaga, Decroly, Mayo, Mayex, Buen Consejo, La Salle and Luther King, and IES Padre Anchieta.
The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, welcomed the crowd of children in the Plaza del Cristo alongside the councillors for Education and Youth, Sergio Eiroa, and Culture, Adrián del Castillo.
Luis Yeray Gutiérrez urged people “not to falter in the construction of peace, harmony and solidarity in the face of those who want to impose a vision of society based on force, resentment and selfishness”. The mayor recalled that La Laguna “is a city that was born without walls, as a sign of welcome, of an open and cosmopolitan spirit, and we have an obligation to pass on this founding idea to our children, so that they can embrace this status as a city of peace”.
At the end of the march, students from various schools read manifestos written by the students themselves, in defence of peace and the resolution of armed conflicts around the world.
