This afternoon, Casa Anchieta hosted the opening of the Humanæ exhibition by the renowned Spanish-Brazilian artist Angélica Dass, an international artistic and educational project which, in this building of Cultural Interest and childhood and youth home of Father Anchieta, connects with La Laguna’s historical vocation for coexistence. The internationally renowned exhibition, which is being held in the Canary Islands for the first time, is being held to mark the 25th anniversary of La Laguna’s declaration as a UNESCO World Heritage City and will be open to the public free of charge until 25 January 2026.
The Councillor for Cultural Heritage, Adolfo Cordobés, invited the public to visit an exhibition that “also reflects our essence, a city open to the world and the heritage of all humanity. Humanæ places us in the international network of cities that have hosted this project, which invites us to look at each other, to recognise that humanity is not defined by borders or labels, but by the infinite range of nuances that shape us”.
What’s more, ‘it does so in a space as symbolic as Casa Anchieta, where the history of encounters between Europe and Latin America provides the perfect setting for discussing diversity and coexistence. This exhibition reminds us that our heritage is not just stone and memory, but also the human wealth that defines us as a plural and inclusive community,’ added Cordobés.
Humanæ is an ongoing photographic project by Angélica Dass that documents human diversity through portraits in which the background reproduces the exact skin tone of the model, linked to the Pantone® palette. The work questions traditional racial labels and celebrates the chromatic plurality of humanity as a symbol of equality, respect and coexistence.
With images from 20 different countries and participants of all ages, beliefs, identities and conditions, the exhibition becomes a global mosaic that celebrates diversity as a common heritage. All information about the exhibition and opening hours is available at https://25aniversario.aytolalaguna.es/exposicion-humanae/
The opening ceremony included a guided tour by the artist herself, who has been participating in the 25th anniversary celebrations and giving workshops for educators and families. At the end of the exhibition, the works on display will be donated to schools in the municipality, thanks to the artist’s commitment to the educational and awareness-raising impact of her work.
Although the commemorative programme included the screening of a video mapping at the Cathedral today, due to weather conditions it has been decided to postpone it until this Saturday (6 December) from 7.30 pm, with continuous screenings until 10 pm. The City Council of La Laguna, in collaboration with the Diocese of Nivariense, will turn the side façade of the Cathedral into a giant screen for a unique audiovisual show that will combine memory, heritage and technology.
